Treating DepressionDepression is a difficult medical condition to treat, partly because the person who is suffering has to see there is an issue, look for medical help and keep up the medical treatment to resolve the issue, and partly because some of the treatments don't fully work to the best of their abilities. There are not many avenues to take when it comes to treating depression; there are only three different types of treatment affecting different stages within the condition. Three different types of treatment for depression Antidepressants When first diagnosed with depression, usually by a local doctor, the treatment prescribed will probably be antidepressant medication. The antidepressant medication is used to try and control the affects of the neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine) has on a persons emotions. Counseling Should the patient still suffer with depression after completing a course of antidepressant medication, then the next course of action will probably be counseling. When counseling is the chosen treatment, it can cause the patient to change their mind on wishing to stop their depression by not turning up for counseling sessions. The reason many patients do not wish to go for counseling is because many patients do not like the idea of talking through their problems with another person. Counseling involves talking to a counseling professional so they can ascertain what is causing the depression, then talk the patient through the issue to try and find a way for them to control their feelings. If a patient suffering with depression does turn up for their counseling sessions it can have very positive affects on a patients recovery. Counseling professionals have been well trained to be impartial and understanding when listening to a person's story, they also know the right questions to ask and the correct "gates" to open so the root cause is found. The counseling professional is then able to talk through the root cause with great affect, managing to get the patient to fully understand the issue themselves. Hospitalization This type of treatment is only used in the most extreme circumstances, usually when there is warning signs that the patient is showing the possibilities of physically hurting themselves or others around them, alcohol or drug abuse or the patient suffering with psychosis. How successful is treatment of depression? Although a lot of treatment depends on the patients will to get better, which can heavily affect the outcome, once a patient has decided they want to overcome the depression, treatment is greatly successful. Most patients will not find resolution to their depression in antidepressants as they only make your body believe that you are not depressed, should you finish the course then the depression may come back. Resolution is normally found by talking to a counseling professional, these professionals are extremely good and effective at finding issues and talking people through them. Overall, if a patient is willing to overcome their depression then visiting a counseling professional is the treatment they should look for, antidepressants are only a short term measure while in the long term counseling is sure to alleviate the problems.
