Hrt - Alternative RemediesRemedies available over the counterYou should always be cautious with what you buy over the counter. Even those remedies that are described 'natural' do not necessarily mean they are safe. Products such as these are not subject to the strict regulations which apply to conventional medicines and drugs. There is therefore little control and regulation of their quality and ingredients. Some herbal remedies have been known to contain contaminants such as arsenic, lead and mercury, all of which are highly toxic to the liver and kidneys. Chinese Medicines should also be handled with caution as they have been known to contain small amounts of active drugs and ingredients that can causes toxicity to the kidneys. Agnus Castus This well researched remedy is also known as Monks Pepper or Chastberry extract. Agnus Castus is available in a tincture of a tablet form. The tablets have a very strong smell, although most women find the tinctures easier to administer. Studies have shown that it can treat Pre-menstrual Tension/Syndrome effectively. It consists of a hormone which has a regulating effect particularly useful in the peri-menopausal phase, as it helps settle the hormone fluctuations. Agnus carter is only effective if other hormones are not already being taken. It can also be used for impaired ovarian functions and dysfunctional uterine bleeding and PMT. Black Cohosh Also known as Cimicifuga Racemosa or Remifemin is a member of the buttercup family and is a woodland perennial. It was widely used by the North American Indians who nicknames it 'Squaw Root.' It was boiled and drank as a tea to help ease menstrual cramps and childbirth pains. Black Cohosh has similar properties to plant's oestrogen and it binds to the same receptors the same ways as human oestrogen. The remedy is particularly useful for emotional symptoms and mood swings which can be present with menopause. Black Cohosh also helps with hot flushes and has a positive effect on high blood pressure. It comes available in tablets or a tincture and drops can be added to water for drinking. Those taking blood pressure treatments and sensitive to Aspirin or Salicylates to be particularly cautious. Evening Primrose Oil Evening Primrose Oil is very well known for its breast pain relieving properties. It is available either as Evening Primrose Oil or Borage Oil and there are a variety of strengths and potencies. You should note the amount of gamma linoleic acid (GLA) in each capsule and aim to take 240mg per day for at least two months before reducing the dose. Evening Primrose Oil has useful effects for breast pain, mood swings, and hot flushes for some women. There can be side effects such as headaches, skin rashes and nausea. Gingko Biloba Gingko Biloba is also known as 'Maidenhair Tree' or 'Memory Tree' extract. It is reported to help with circulation and memory problems. It can help improve glucose and oxygen supply to the brain. Those who take anti clotting drugs (anticoagulants) such as Warfarin, Aspirin such not take Gingko Bilioba. Kava Kava This has now been withdrawn due to reports of liver damage Sage Sage can be taken as a tea or an extract to relieve hot flushes. Those with high blood pressure should be particularly cautious. St John's Wort Also known as 'natural Prozac'. This acts by inhibiting neurotransmitters in the brain, having a reduction on anxiety and depression. Studies have shown that St John's Wort is as effective as conventional anti-depressants. These may interact with other drugs. Please ask your pharmacist for those drugs affected. Wild Yam The human body can not break down Yam into sex hormones so they can't have an effect on oestrogen or progesterone in women. You should always consult your Doctor before taking any of the above remedies.
