Self Treatment And Coping With Bowel Incontinence

There are three ways to reduce problems with bowel incontinence. Reduce constipation, control diarrhea, and avoid straining during bowel movements. Fecal incontinence can be treated successfully by treating chronic constipation. Eating foods with high fiber, drinking more liquids, and getting more exercise can help reduce the constipation problem. A mind laxative may also be considered. If your incontinence is caused by diarrhea, eliminate the cause of the diarrhea and use antidiarrhea medications that can be bought at your local drugstore. Severe diarrhea may be caused by an inflammation in the intestines or an infection. Try to avoid straining during your bowel movements. This will weaken your anal sphincter muscle and lead to bowel incontinence.

If your fecal incontinence cannot be corrected, you will want to find ways of limiting the accidents you have by controlling your bowel movements. If you experience chronic fecal incontinence, try keeping a food diary to see if you can identify the foods that could be causing your problems. Foods that can cause bowel incontinence are fatty, greasy foods, foods that are spicy, cured or smoked meats and if you are lactose intolerant, you should avoid dairy products. Artificial sweeteners in sugar free gum and diet soda can also act as a laxative as well as caffeine containing drinks and alcohol.

Try spacing your meals, eating smaller meals more often throughout the day. Three large ones will sometimes cause bowel contractions and cause diarrhea. Eating more fiber makes stools softer and easier to control. It is recommended you eat between 20 and 30 grams of fiber every day. Add it to your diet slowly so it doesn’t cause bloating, gas, and diarrhea. Drinking more water will also help keep your stools softer and formed. The recommended water intake is eight glasses of liquid every day. Sodas do not count, but unsweetened, decaffeinated coffee and tea do count toward your liquid intake.

The area around your anus may become irritated after experiencing bowel incontinence problems. Keep the skin around your anus as clean and dry as possible. It also will help remove any possible odors that come with fecal incontinence. Wash the area with warm water after each bowel movement. You can do this by using dampened toilet paper, taking a shower, or by soaking in a bat. Soap is an irritant and can dry the skin and rubbing with dry toilet paper can also cause irritation. Using disposable towelettes or wipes that are alcohol free is a good alternative for cleaning the area. If you are short on time, you can gently pat dry the area with toilet paper or clean washcloth. It is recommended to let the area air-dry as much as possible.

Wearing cotton underwear and loose clothing makes irritation problems around the anus worse. Clothing that is too tight can restrict airflow to the area. It is important to change any soiled undergarments as soon as possible. Products such as absorbent pads and disposable underwear may help you manage your incontinence problem if it cannot be erased. These products can be found in grocery stores, drugstores and medical supply stores. You may also buy them online and have them delivered in a plain, unmarked package.
