Weakened Immune System? How To Avoid Getting Even Sicker

People with compromised immune systems have to be particularly careful during their daily lives to avoid getting sick with a virus or some bacterial infection. For some, the flu or a simple cold can be devastating and turn into something more serious like pneumonia. Cancer, AIDS, transplant patients and more all have cause for concern. Luckily there are a multitude of things that you can do to avoid viral or bacterial infections and stay healthy. Read on for some handy tips:

Food Issues

1. Always check food labels for expiration dates and throw anything away that appears old or outdated.
2. If a food appears moldy (bread and cheese are good examples) or smells a bit “off,” do not try and consume it. Play it safe and toss it.
3. Wash vegetables by using a soft bristled vegetables brush and then dry with a paper towel or air dry. Also wash fruits, even those that you peel to avoid any contamination issues. Lettuce and fresh spinach should be thoroughly washed to avoid E. coli. If possible, rinse vegetables in a mild vinegar solution as an added precaution.
4. When traveling, always eat cooked meats and vegetables and avoid raw foods.
5. Incorporate fresh garlic into a daily diet as it has both antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Cleanliness Issues

1. Practice cleanliness and disinfect the hard surfaces of the home like the kitchen and bathroom countertops, computer mouse and keyboard and even the telephone receiver. There are plenty of germs living on these surfaces and a spray disinfectant works wonders at eradicating them. If possible, disinfect your steering wheel of your car and even your purse.
2. Change your pillow cases often and clean your pillows at least once a week or more. Bacteria and fungal spores often accumulate in pillows. Err on the side of caution and purchase pillows that are hypoallergenic and can be washed with ease.
3. When washing hands, always use paper towels to dry them rather than hand towels where bacteria and viruses can breed.
4. Use the steam dry heat function on your dishwasher or if you wash dishes by hand, allow them to air dry rather than use a towel to do so.
5. Never use anyone else’s towel in the bathroom or elsewhere. Also use a new towel each day if possible as germs can harbor in the moist towels as they dry.
6. Always wash hands with warm water and soap. Lather up and rub the soap in your hands for about a minute, rinse and then dry with a paper towel. Wash hands after diaper changes, before and after food preparations, and even before changing contact lenses.

Avoiding Germs

1. Avoid sick people. If your immune system is compromised or your doctor tells you to avoid illness, do not hug, kiss or visit sick family and friends. Wait until they are well. Keep a hand sanitizer on your person if you happen to be shaking hands with someone.
2. Avoid touching your face near the eyes, nose and mouth as these are the likely places where an infection can enter the body.
3. If you are in a public place, try to avoid touching door handles, shopping cart handles and other things that many people in a public place might touch. Carry a hand sanitizer or antibacterial wipes when you must touch something, like when you shop for groceries.
4. If you are ever in doubt about a place, wear a simple surgical mask. Sure, you will get some stares but it beats being felled by an illness that could have been prevented.

As you can see, there are a variety of ways to avoid getting sick. Just use your common sense and make accommodations in your routine or schedule to ensure that you are avoiding germs as much as possible.
