Conceiving After 35As social expectations have changed, more and more women are waiting until their mid-thirties to begin having children. For years we have been hearing about the increased risk to the mother as she ages, but it is also important to consider the fertility of the woman after the age of 35. 35 may not be a magical number that suddenly means you are less fertile, but it is certainly a representative number of when fertility generally begins to drop in women and men alike. This reduced fertility makes it much more difficult to conceive after the age of 35 and even more difficult as more time passes. This is because of the way the uterus develops over time, and the changes it undergoes when it is not carrying children. The most common cause of decreased fertility in women over the age of 35 is endometriosis, which is when the cells that make up the internal lining of the uterus begin growing on the outside of the uterus as well. This causes scarring, and may render the female incapable of becoming pregnant. There are many suggestions for how to avoid this problem, but there are no real cures for the problem. One suggestion is to take birth control pills in the time before you are trying to conceive because the hormones in the pills help to preserve your uterus over time. However, birth control does have other side effects that may not be so desirable. The risk to the mother who conceives after the age of 35 is also marginally increased. As the woman ages it becomes more difficult for her body to support an embryo. If she does manage to conceive, it is more likely that there will be some complications with the pregnancy. Despite the increased risk, modern medical technology has made it so that even the biggest risks can be taken care of if necessary. The idea that there may be risks involved in pregnancy after the age of 35 should not deter you or make you change your plans for your family, however. Conceiving after the age of 35 has become a popular practice in the developed society. As it has become more common the medical technology has grown with it so that even the risks that may have been most dangerous in the past are generally taken care of. The only real difficulty that you may have to deal with is your body’s natural infertility over time. Fertility begins to gradually decrease in men and women over the age of 35, therefore it may be more difficult to conceive even if your body is capable of handling the pregnancy without any other risks. If you are truly intent upon becoming pregnant after the age of 35, but your fertility makes it difficult or impossible, there are many new methods of artificial insemination that you may take into consideration. Once you have conceived, the pregnancy itself may hold some complications, but most of these can be dealt with reasonably and without any real health risk to the mother.
