Corpora Amylacea -- What Is This Prostate Problem?

Corpora amylacea, also known as amyloids, is the accumulation of dense amounts of calcified materials that are protein based in nature.

Corpora amylacea normally affects men who are more senior in age, by this we mean men over the age of about sixty years old.

So what is the full explanation of Corpora amylacea?

The calcified material, which is an insoluble fibrous protein, blocks the prostatic ducts. This is believed to happen when the prostate cannot function normally and the fluid it produces cannot be secreted properly or if there has been an infection in the prostate and the pus from the infection cannot drain properly.

If this happens the fluids stuck in the ducts harden over time and calcify causing little stones which block the tube where the fluids pass out the prostate, this makes more fluid build up and causes more stone to be made over a period of time.

Are there any other effects because of Corpora amylacea?

No not really, sometimes people may have this condition for years and not know, although there is a belief that Corpora amylacea can be an underlying issue due to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a condition found in older men where the prostate naturally swells to an abnormal size and shape. When this happens it can cause the prostate to press on the urethra and make it painful, or difficult to pass urine.

The abnormal size is what is believed to cause the prostate stones (Corpora amylacea), because the prostate is not its normal size the ducts cannot function properly and release the fluids down the tubes because they become twisted or narrow from the swelling.

So what happens to alleviate this?

Qualified medical professionals will carry out examinations and tests to determine that this is the cause and then write out a plan of treatment for you.

The treatments will likely start out as simple medication to try and alleviate the symptoms a person may feel, but if this does not work then more extreme measures will be taken.

In some cases surgery to remove part of the prostate can be the only treatment that will give success in alleviating the problem. By removing a part of the prostate, the surgery hopes to reduce the prostate to a more normal size and open up the ducts so secretions can pass through more freely.

Summary

One condition in the prostate can signal the fact that there is another underlying condition, it also shows the fact that symptoms are not always visible to the people who have the condition.

For those of you who are over sixty years in age, medical professionals say that you should get checked annually for any prostate problems so you can catch any problems early before they cause any more damage. It is also important to visit a medical professional should you ever experience any symptoms associated with prostate problems, such as pain urinating, passing blood in the urine or problems gaining an erection.
