What Do You Know About Psoriasis?


Psoriasis is one of those diseases that those who do not have it, avoid those who do. Looking at it is difficult as it looks as itchy as it probably feels. The red, often times scaly skin is hard to look at while you are eating. The first thought most people have is, "don't touch me, I do not want to get whatever you have!" What do you know about psoriasis? Is your information fact or something that you heard someone say about it?

Did you know that there are five different types of psoriasis?

The inflammatory skin condition known as psoriasis can manifest itself in five different types.

The most common type of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis. Yes, plaque as in the sticky substance on your teeth when you forget to brush them. Approximately 80% of individuals who have psoriasis, have the this type. It looks like raised patches of reddish skin that is covered with silvery-white scale. The patches are called, "plaques", hence the name.

The typical body parts that plaque psoriasis appears are: elbows, knees, lower back and also the scalp. The plaques can appear on other body parts as well, but these are the most common areas to see it in. The red patches of skin are very itchy and painful.
Erythrodermic psoriasis covers most of or all of the body in redness, is severely itchy and painful.

Guttate psoriasis appears as small, red spots on the skin.

Inverse psoriasis appears as red lesions that are smooth and form in the skin folds of the body. Obese individuals are prone to this type of psoriasis.

Pustular psoriasis appears as white pustules that are surrounded by reddened skin.

Psoriasis is uncomfortable no matter which type the individual has. The itchy skin, cracking and bleeding occurs no matter which type of psoriasis is present. The discomfort is day and night. At night the itching can keep the individual awake and during the day the pain can make tasks difficult to perform.

Did you know that psoriasis is a chronic (lifelong) condition and that the individuals who have it will experience flare-ups and remissions over and over again? Treatment and therapy can control the signs and symptoms of psoriasis. The treatment for psoriasis can vary and will depend on the type and severity of the psoriasis. The psoriasis may be so mild that a person may not even notice that they have it. Most individuals have moderate psoriasis symptoms and rarely a person has severe symptoms of psoriasis.

There are more than 4.5 million adults throughout the U.S.A. who have had the diagnosis of one or more types of psoriasis each and every year. Statistics show that 20% of those 4.5 million will fall somewhere between the moderate to severe range of psoriasis.

Did you know that both males and females get psoriasis in equal proportions according to statistics? It is slightly more common in fair skined individuals but all skin colors can get psoriasis.

Statistically throughout the world psoriasis appears to affect those of Scandinavian discent more than any other ethnic groups with Afican Americans being affected by psoriasis slightly less often than those of fair skin. It is far less common among Asians and is rare to be seen among those of Native American ethnicity.

Research shows that there is a strong possibility that there is a genetic connection to the skin condition. Of individuals who have psoriasis approximately 1/3 of them have at least one other family member with psoriasis.

Did you know that the first flare-up of psoriasis can happen between the ages of 15 and 35? Psoriasis can have onset at any age, however with after age 40, seeing a peak onset period occuring between 50 and 60 years of age. One out of every ten individuals who have psoriasis developed it for the first time during their childhood.
