Rosacea is a very common skin condition that affects a large portion of the population.

When you have rosacea, you need to seek the advice of your doctor. Your doctor can recommend the right treatment for you and can help make sure that you condition does not worsen. Since rosacea is a progressive disorder, you need to be aware of the complications that could occur. Here are some complications that could occur and may need further medical attention.

Peripheral vasodilation: This is a medical term that refers to the sudden reddening or flushing of the face. This is one of the most common symptoms of rosacea and will probably the first thing that a person will notice when he or she starts to experience rosacea. If you notice persistent reddening or flushing of the face, you may think that you are experiencing other conditions. Middle aged women, who are prone to rosacea, may believe that they are going through menopause. Flushing is quite common during menopause. However, menopause flushing and rosacea are different. You will notice that with rosacea, the reddening can happen at any time and may be accompanied by small bumps or dryness and itching.

Conjunctivitis: When you suffer from rosacea, then you may develop problems relating to the eye. Some rosacea actually settles in the eye, but you may also find that you are prone to conjunctivitis. This is often associated with redness, swelling and discharge in the eyes. It is important to remember that this is contagious and you need to talk to your doctor about treatment. Most likely, your doctor will prescribe an ointment or other type of eye medication, such as eye drops to treat the problem.

Burning and itching: Many people that suffer from rosacea will have problems with burning and itching on the face. This could be caused by the weather or temperature changes or from make up and other facial products such as soap or lotions. You skin will be sensitive so you need to make sure you stay properly hydrated and that you use hypoallergenic facial products.

Enlargement of the nose: If you suffer from the type of rosacea that causes problems of the nose, then you may require cosmetic or plastic surgery. Sometimes, rosacea can cause tissue build up on the nose and it needs to be removed or reshaped. This is not a major surgery, but it can certainly improve the look of your nose when rosacea causes enlargement. Talk to your doctor to find out if this type of surgery is right for you.
