Which Methods Work Best For Quitting Smoking?

There are many methods that can be used to quit smoking. Some people choose to go with programs that offer medical assistance, some use counselors, some go it alone without any assistance while others employ the patch and still others quit smoking cigarettes with the assistance of hypnosis. Those smokers who have tried to quit smoking will know that it is a very difficult thing to do. Often it takes more than one try to kick the habit. The overall success rate for smokers quitting is only twenty five percent. Statistics prove that two in five smokers quit successfully. There are no single issues that seem to make one person more successful than another, but in so many cases motivation was a factor for those who smoked and quit. For example, those with medical conditions were more likely to be successful when quitting with a thirty six percent success rate. But the method with the most startling results by far was hypnosis, with an amazing eighty percent success rate for cigarette smokers trying to quit.
There are other methods that have had some success though not one that has come in at even half of the rate of using hypnosis. People who try combination methods were successful twenty nine percent of the time. Combination techniques include things like using exercise and breathing skills to stop smoking. The next most successful was smoke aversion. This method actually uses stale cigarette smoke which is still warm and has it blown into the face of the smoker who is trying to quit. It has shown a success rate of twenty five percent of smokers using it being able to quit. Acupuncture has a similar rate of twenty four percent of smokers quitting after an acupuncture system of treatments.
Self-help methods have not been great at achieving a high accomplishment rate amongst smoker. There are many books that are available to be read on how to stop smoking. There are DVDs or vides available to purchase and watch as well as advice pamphlets and articles that can be found in doctor’s offices or online. This form of assistance has only a nine percent success rate. Nicotine gum does only slightly better. It had a success rate of ten percent. There are also nicotine inhalers and sprays both of which have results similar to the nicotine gum. The nicotine patch also has similar results. The worst results were from talks given by a person’s health care provider trying to convince their patients to quit. Almost no one listens to them.
These results are based on studies that are done that are conducted with control groups to ensure that the test results are clear. They are based on results after a twenty four week period. This is because if someone can go that long without smoking then there are well on their way to spending the rest of their lives smoke free. So, if you are ready to quit smoking, pick a method and get started.
