James Randi And Spiritual HealingThese days, more and more people are turning to alternative medicines in order to treat problems that they may be experiencing with their health. There are many different solutions that can be employed in order to help an individual, and it can often be difficult to tell exactly what type of treatment you should attempt to undergo in order to attack the problem that you are facing. In this article, we'll focus on a type of healing that is subject to plenty of criticism: spiritual healing. Spiritual healers claim to be able to treat many different and normally incurable problems that people are experiencing with their health. Claiming to draw upon a higher power in order to imbue energy into the individual, there have been numerous spiritual healers on television and throughout the world claiming to offer all of the answers. As with any type of medicine in which the results aren't easily observable, the topic of spiritual healing has been heavily debated by many. One man by the name of James Randi has argued against the practice of spiritual healing due to his belief that it offers no result aside from a possible placebo effect. James Randi is a magician who has worked in his life to debunk 'junk science'. In order to prove that his beliefs that spiritual healers are merely taking advantage of individuals who are seeking their treatment, he has put out an open challenge to all of the self-proclaimed spiritual healers in the world. Offering a full million dollars to any individual who can successfully prove that they are able to perform an act of spiritual healing that produces a significant result. Randi has worked to shut down spiritual healers that were shams in the past, such as a man named Peter Popoff. Popoff works as a television evangelist, and claimed to be able to spiritually heal. Randi wrote an expose on how Popoff was performing his supposed miracles, discovering that Popoff was receiving information about audience members from a radio earpiece that his wife spoke into after having conversations with crowd members before the show began. Also, Popoff would bring audience members who could walk onto stage in a wheelchair, causing a dramatic stir to occur when the crowd member arose although nothing significant had actually occurred regarding their ability to walk. After this was exposed, Popoff lost much of his fan base and found himself declaring bankruptcy later on that year. James Randi continues to perform significant work as a skeptic, working to shed light on areas of pseudo-science in which people are taken advantage of. People like Peter Popoff just go to show you that you need to think with your head and not your heart when you are looking for a way of treating a problem that you may be having. There are plenty of people out there who are happy to take advantage of an individual who is suffering due to a disease, so always keep a skeptic eye on any type of untested treatment that you are considering taking.
