What Is Therapeutic Touch?Practitioners of Therapeutic touch believe there is a life energy force that flows in and around the body. Therapeutic Touch healers believe that illness, pain, or an injury interrupts this flow of energy and unbalance the patient's life force. Healers detect the unbalance by passing their hands over the patient's body. Once they have discovered where the unbalance is, they believe they can equalize the imbalances and this contributes to the healing of the patient. Therapeutic Touch is practiced around the world and is taught in over 80 colleges and universities in the United States and in over 65 other countries. Therapeutic Touch has been under fire by its critiques in recent years. Critics say Therapeutic Touch is no more effective than an individual who is caring and empathic passing their hands over the patient's body. A reward has been offered of $1 million dollars to anyone who can prove in clinical and controlled studies that Therapeutic Touch works. This award is available for anyone who can provide proof of paranormal abilities. That includes water dousing also! Therapeutic Touch healers use breathing, imagery, meditation, and visualization to connect with the patient and achieve inner stillness and wholeness. Once the healer has "centered" they gather information from the patient. They will place their hands about six inches above the patient's body and move their hands in a symmetrical manner starting at the head and traveling down the body to the feet. Healers use their senses to detect any abnormal energy fields. They may find clues such as excess cooling or warmth, static fields, tingling, and blockages. These would indicate an imbalance in the patient's energy field. Once an imbalance is found, the healer begins the intervention part of the treatment. The first part is called "clearing." The healer helps the flow of energy to flow normally in the patient's body. "Unruffling" is another technique the healer uses by passing hand movements from the middle of the body to the head and feet in a rhythmic manner. Balancing and rebalancing is the step that follows. This step involves projecting and directing the subject's energy field to re-establish the correct energy flow in the patient's body. The hands of the healer are moved to the area where they sense there are problems and transfer energy from their energy flow to the patient's. Evaluation and closure is the final stage of Therapeutic Touch healing. The healer senses or decides when the patient's energy field is properly balanced. Asking for feedback from the patient while the treatment is conducted allows the healer to decide when the therapy session should end. The healer will also reassess the patient's energy field during the treatment. The patient should be relaxed and have a peaceful feeling when the healer has finished the treatment. The healer may feel drained of energy and be extremely tired. Those with severe and ongoing pain may choose to try this form of alternative therapy. Many people report good results when they have completed a Therapeutic Touch session.
